It is not secret, that owning a pool in the Sunshine State certainly comes with its perks. Namely, enjoying a relaxing day at the pool with friends and family or having a pool-side barbecue during the 4th of July. It also goes without saying, that pool maintenance and repairs also come with pool ownership. It is important to address pool maintenance issues-leaks, cracks, etc-as quickly as possible, to avoid dealing with more serious (and costly) pool-related problems in the future.
With this in mind, we’ll discuss the most common types of pool repairs in South Florida:
Leaking Pool Pumps:
Given the significant amount of water pressure and chemicals flowing through a system, a leak could arise due to a worn-out pump lid, a drain plug, or the pipes pushing water out of the pump. Not to mention, the beautiful-yet often scorching sun-beating down in South Florida. So, if you notice water leaking down from the bottom of the seal plate for instance, it could indicate a broken shaft seal.
Clogged Pump:
If the pump pressure drops, or you notice a decrease in water flow, or the motor is running at a higher pitch than normal (even when the basket is not full) your pump impeller may be clogged.
Skimmer Leaks:
Skimmer types vary from pool to pool. For this reason, the material with which the pool is constructed must also be taking into consideration when addressing skimmer leaks. On concrete pools, for example, the skimmer can be separated from the pool structure. By contrast, on vinyl pools, skimmer leaks can be caused by a worn-out, faulty, or improperly installed, skimmer gasket. Normally, these issues are fairly easy to fix. However, if they not addressed in a timely manner, they could quickly “snow ball”-so to speak-into a major repair job.
Pool Filter Leaks:
Pool filter leaks require immediate attention because it exerts the most pressure. If you own an older filter tank (stainless steel or plastic) with a pinhole leak, shut it down immediately and replace it as soon as possible.
Melted Pump Fitting:
If your pool pump runs dry, it can generate a considerable amount of heat; which in turn, can cause the threads to melt and shrink. Ultimately, causing leaks. Since this type of leak comes from the pressure side of the pool the only way to fix it is to cut it out and replace it with a heat-resistant fitting to prevent the problem from recurring in the future.
